Minnesota's Public Health Coverage Programs:
General Assistance Medical Care

Information subject to change.

What is General Assistance Medical Care?
GAMC is a free health coverage program for very low-income people who do not qualify for other public health care programs. GAMC is county-administered and eligibility is based on income, household size, residency, and inability to qualify for other programs.

Who is eligible for GAMC?
Adults ages 21 through 64 who are not disabled and do not have children under age 19 living in their household may qualify for GAMC providing they meet all program eligibility criteria. Adults must have an annual gross income of 75% of the Federal Poverty Guideline (FPG) or less to qualify for GAMC. In addition to income eligibility, applicants for GAMC must have resided in Minnesota for at least 30 days and be U.S. citizens or have acceptable immigration status.

Are there asset limits for GAMC?
Yes. Applicants for full coverage GAMC can only have assets that total $1,000 (excluding home and car used for work).

What services does GAMC cover?
Services include routine checkups, immunizations, hospitalization (inpatient services), doctor care, prescriptions, glasses, dental work and routine dental exams, medical equipment, costs for medical transportation to and from medical appointments, chemical dependency treatment, mental health services and much more. There are no monthly premium payments but there are some co-payments required for emergency room visits, eyeglasses, restorative dental, drugs and other services.

What if I have past medical bills?
GAMC does not cover past medical bills.

How often do I need to reapply for GAMC?
Recipients must reapply for the program every six months. However, changes in household composition or income must be reported as they occur.
