Click here to watch the YouTube video of Medard telling his story of walking to safety from war-torn Congo.

Medard Prosper, a war orphan, walked with his siblings for 500 dangerous miles to escape his war-torn country of Congo.  Hear him tell his story of survival, loss and finally success in America. Medard won a $500 college scholarship and laptop computer from the Children's Defense Fund-MN Beat the Odds® program in March 2012.  Tragically he died in a car accident one month later.

Children's Defense Fund-Minnesota expresses our sincere sympathy to Medard's family and friends in the loss of this amazingly resiliant and positive young man. Memorials are accepted at any U.S. Bank location to the Medard Prosper Memorial Fund.  Medard's Beat the Odds scholarship will be donated to the memorial fund and the laptop will go to his brothers who are pursuing their education.
