A report released today by CDF-MN describes the long-term harmful effects of unaddressed maternal depression on children’s development. Maternal depression can be prevented if identified early. Read the Summary. Read Report.
In Minnesota it is estimated that one in 10 babies each year is born to a mother experiencing serious depression during his or her first year of life. This represented nearly 14,000 mothers and infants in 2009.
Every untreated case of maternal depression in Minnesota is estimated to cost society at a minimum $23,000 per year in terms of lost productivity for both mother and child.
