MEDIA ADVISORY

“Kid Candidates,” Guest Speakers Highlight Importance of Voting, Improving Lives of Children and Families

What: On July 23, 2014, Children’s Defense Fund-Minnesota (CDF-MN) will join more than 200 Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools sites in 96 cities and 29 states across the country for a National Day of Social Action.  Seven of 12 Freedom School sites in the Twin Cities area will come together to participate in the event. Participating sites include: Kwanzaa Community Church, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (Folwell), North Community YMCA, and Pillsbury United Communities (Oak Park) in Minneapolis, Brooklyn Junior High and North View Junior High in Osseo, and Riverview School in St. Paul. CDF-MN Freedom School college student leaders who serve as mentors and teachers for the children enrolled will host a mock election and rally featuring “kid candidates.” The “kid candidates” – and guest speakers – will educate the audience on the importance of voting and working to improve the lives of children and families.

The voting education and empowerment event coincides with the 50th Anniversary of Freedom Summer in which college students across the country traveled to Mississippi to register African-American voters and educate their children in Freedom Schools. The CDF Freedom Schools program provides summer enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, and generates more positive attitudes toward learning. It was inspired by and modeled after the Freedom Schools established as part of the 1964 Freedom Summer Project 50 years ago.  Freedom Schools play a critical role in helping to curb summer learning loss and close the opportunity gap for children.
