The Child Defender Newsletter:
This is a free, regular CDF Minnesota publication filled with important information about Minnesota children, including analysis of the latest legislative session, updates on new report releases, and information on how CDF Minnesota is impacting the lives of Minnesota children and how readers can too.

The Road Not Traveled
This CDF Minnesota report examines how Minnesota children are increasingly falling through cracks in the health care system, allowing tens of thousands of children to go without health care coverage.

Child Care - Missed Opportunities Still Produce Costly Outcomes:
The original 2005 CDF Minnesota report focused on Minnesota's Child Care Assistance Program, which provides low-income working families with financial assistance to access early care and education for their children. This updated report contains the outcomes from the 2006 legislative session.

Family Support Snap Shot #1: School Breakfasts and Lunches:
This CDF Minnesota report, the first in a series that examines the importance of public programs to the health of families and communities, focuses on free and reduced-cost school meal programs in Minnesota and the need to expand this vital support for families and children.

Family Support Snap Shot #2: Energy Assistance:
This CDF Minnesota report, the second in a series, reveals that burdensome energy costs can adversely affect children's health, but that programs such as Minnesota's Energy Assistance Program (EAP) have a protective effect. It highlights research showing that that children living in families who received help paying energy bills were less likely to be undernourished, underweight, and even hospitalized than other children in similar households.

KIDS COUNT DATA BOOK 2006 - The Wonder Years: Early Childhood in Minnesota:
This annual CDF Minnesota publication examined the health, safety, economic security, and education of Minnesota's young children using more than 15 national and state-level data sources and also provides an updated county-by-county profile of how Minnesota's children under age 18 are doing using 10 data indicators. Additional information is provided about how each area affects children's lives, as well as demographics, data sources, and resources to learn more.

Keeping What They've Earned, Working Minnesotans and Tax Credits, Refund Anticipation Loan (RAL) Report
More than 53,000 low- to moderate-income Minnesota households who received the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) paid commercial tax preparers an average of 236% Annual Percentage Rate (APR) to get their tax refunds more quickly in 2004, according to this January 2006 report released by the Children's Defense Fund Minnesota. The report also finds that $24 million in EITC tax benefits were diverted from Minnesota's low-wage families to commercial tax preparers and national banks that year.
