The School Breakfast Initiative is launching a statewide School Breakfast Challenge to increase participation in the School Breakfast Program among low-income Minnesota students. The School Breakfast Initiative is a partnership between Hunger-Free Minnesota and Children’s Defense Fund-Minnesota.
Hear about what hunger and breakfast mean to principals, teachers, and food service staff around the state, and learn more about the School Breakfast Challenge:
Selected schools will receive an initial award of $2,500 in unrestricted funds to support their adoption of best practice breakfast service models such as Grab 'n Go or Breakfast in the Classroom. Additionally, Hunger-Free Minnesota will pay a $0.25 per meal incentive during the 2014-15 school year to participating schools that increase their school breakfast meals served to free- and reduced-price (F/R) eligible children over the prior school year. These awards are unrestricted gifts to the school and can be used for any school purpose.
The $0.25 incentive will be calculated and paid quarterly based on data schools already provide to the Minnesota Department of Education. Each selected school can earn rewards for up to 25,000 additional breakfasts per academic school year. All incentives are subject to availability of funds, and payment timing is contingent on data availability from the Minnesota Department of Education.
Up to 60 schools will be selected to participate, and all will receive notification by April 15, 2014.
Eligible schools must have a minimum of 40% of their students eligible for free or reduced-price school meals according to a determination by the Minnesota Department of Education.
All schools must have the support of their school principal to increase the number of F/R-eligible students receiving school breakfast during the 2014-15 school year.
The deadline for applications is NOW FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 2014.
