Child Advocacy

Child advocates speak up on behalf of children. It's easy to do and it makes a difference!

Why we must advocate for children:  Children have only one birth, one childhood, one chance to fulfill their potential to achieve success as adults.  Because they cannot vote and do not have lobbyists, we must step up and take action. Policies adults enact impact children’s lives, therefore, children must deserve a voice in the process.

What is child advocacy? Speaking out on their behalf of children and holding elected officials accountable.

What can I do?  Public discussion and advocacy builds the power to create policy around the needs of Minnesota’s children. You have that power.

  • Write a letter to the editor of your local paper
  • Call talk radio shows, giving voice to children’s issues
  • Talk with your neighbors, fellow students, your congregation
  • Vote
  • Register others to vote
  • Ask candidates how they will vote on specific issues that affect children
  • Raise awareness of children’s issues with postings on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Promote the work of CDF–MN by using its website and blog
  • Help organize and attend Freedom School’s Social Action Day at the Capitol in July

Voting is the way you hire your representatives.

  • Ask candidates questions before you vote
  • Check out candidates’ positions on their websites
  • Read local newspaper articles
  • Attend candidate forums (don’t rely on TV ads!)
  • Make candidates respond to children’s issues.
