Reaching out to Minnesota's Senators and Representatives (July 2007)
Rose Baumann of U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar's office spoke to nearly 100 scholars from Kwanzaa Freedom School about efforts to cover all kids in Washington, D.C.

Later that day at U.S. Senator Norm Coleman's office, Vicki Tigwell, and Andy Burmeister from Coleman's staff received letters on health care coverage written by more than 150 scholars at the St. Paul Freedom School. The Senate is now debating the State Children's Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP) and plans to reauthorize the program this year.

The Children's Defense Fund works with community sponsors, parents, young adults and community leaders to forge a new vision for working with and educating children through the CDF Freedom Schools program.
CDF Freedom Schools programs provide critical summer and after-school enrichment through a model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components: high quality academics, parent and family involvement, civic engagement and social action, intergenerational leadership development, and nutrition, health and mental health.
An initiative that grew out of the Children's Defense Fund's Black Community Crusade for Children®, CDF Freedom SchoolsSM program sites offer a unique vision of education, rooted in the cultural traditions of literacy, service, and advocacy.
